What is the Extended Essay?

Along with Theory of Knowledge and CAS, the Extended essay is a core component of the IB Diploma. It prepares students for big papers down the road; the final product is a 4000 word paper, which answers a specific yet open-ended question of their choice. However, the real fun is in the process! Towards the middle of 11th grade, students chose an IB subject they are passionate about - it can be anything, from History to Physics. Through preliminary research, they find something specific to that subject which interests them: the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya or diamagnetism. To make an effective essay, they are going to choose a concise question they will be able to effectively explore in the word range. That's where the bulk of the research starts. Students will explore a range of academic sources, and by evaluating and comparing them, reach a conclusion to their research question. Along the way, they are supported by an advisor, typically a teacher for the subject, who can help brainstorm ideas, rephrase the question, and find reliable sources. With all the research, the students then write a first draft which they revise with their supervisor. Written feedback is only given once, and from there, the students finalize the work and submit it around November of 12th grade. The essay is eventually sent off to IB land - with no identifiers - and undergoes marking by examiners in the subject.
